Kartoffelessen - Ushuaia, Bienal del Fin del Mundo, 2009
Curator: Alfons Hug

For the opening night of the Bienal del Fin del Mundo Mahony realized the work Kartoffelessen (potato dinner) in the theater of the Centro Beagle, Ushuaia. The entrance of the audience was accompanied by diary excerpts of Shackletons diary (off-voice by Matthew J. Andrew, UK). The main performance consisted of pulling a 7 meters-diameter plate on stage to construct a table for 40 persons. On the other side of the room, the Argentinian performer Ezequiel Monteros was reading a letter to the Curator of the Bienal. The letter tells the story of the Importer who failed in his attempt to bring a barrel of Sourcrout for the potato dinner, because he foundered on mechanisms of beaucracy (Dear James). Finally the audience got involved by taking plates with prepared potato meals and carry them to eat, either on the big table or on smaller ones in the audience of the theater accompanied by the music A Te O Cara, Amor Talora, I Puritani/Bellini, which refers to the movie Fitzcarraldo by Werner Herzog.
